A LIFE AS BIG AS HIS HEART

About Rich

1946 - 2012 · Husband, father, broadcaster, pastor, friend

Rich Buhler was a talk-show host, author, consultant, pastor, pilot, speaker, and father of seven, with more than forty years in media and ministry. He grew up in Cottonwood, Arizona, and graduated from Biola University in 1968 with a degree in psychology - the foundation for a lifetime of listening to, and caring for, people in pain.

He got his start in radio at seventeen at the all-news station KFWB, rising to news announcer and taking part in the 1968 launch of California's second all-news station, before writing and editing for CBS-owned KNX 1070. Called to ministry, he completed pastoral studies at the Omega Center and was ordained, serving nine years as the head pastor of a Foursquare church in Southern California.

Returning to radio in 1981, he hosted the live, daily, nationally-syndicated program "Talk From the Heart" - described as the most-listened-to local religious radio program in the nation throughout its fifteen-year run from Los Angeles. He came back to the microphone at KBRT in 2008.

"The top mental-health issue of our time is the invisible damage caused by abuse - and the journey toward recovery is where our greatest humanity is found."

— Rich Buhler

He wrote five books on relationships and recovery for Thomas Nelson Publishers, naming emotional injury from abuse as a critical mental-health concern. He consulted for media organizations and two U.S. presidential campaigns, owned the production company Branches Communications, and founded TruthOrFiction.com to research the rumors and urban legends spreading across the early internet - work that brought him onto CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, and ABC.

Rich received honorary doctorates from Biola University (Doctor of Laws) and Trinity Graduate School of Psychology (Doctor of Humane Letters). He and his wife, Dianne, made their home in Southern California with a blended family of ten adult children and thirteen grandchildren. He loved flying airplanes, fly-fishing, computing, amateur astronomy, cooking, and travel. He died in May 2012 from complications of pancreatic cancer.
